'Zootopia 2' Shatters Box Office Records in China: What's Behind Its $275 Million Opening? (2026)

Against all odds, Disney’s ‘Zootopia 2’ is roaring louder than ever in China — smashing box office records and rewriting the playbook for Hollywood’s global strategy. But here’s where it gets intriguing: this triumph isn’t happening in an environment that particularly favors foreign films. In fact, Chinese audiences have shown dwindling interest in overseas releases for years. Yet somehow, ‘Zootopia 2’ broke that pattern in dramatic fashion.

As of Monday morning in Beijing, the box office tracker Maoyan reported that the film had amassed an astonishing 1.95 billion yuan (about $275.6 million) in just six days. That milestone makes it the top-grossing animated foreign movie ever released in China. Ashley Dudarenok, founder of China-focused digital consultancy Chozan, noted that the film’s messages of perseverance, harmony, and social unity resonated deeply with local viewers — perhaps even more so in the current cultural climate.

What’s even more striking is the dominance of ‘Zootopia 2’ during its debut. Roughly 95% of all Chinese movie ticket sales over the opening weekend went to this single title. That level of saturation is rare — especially when viewed against the backdrop of a market where American films have steadily lost ground over the past decade. The original ‘Zootopia,’ released in 2016, had already set a high bar when it became China’s most beloved foreign animated movie of its time.

But the landscape has changed dramatically since then. Trade tensions between the U.S. and China earlier this year led Beijing to limit the number of American films allowed in local theaters — a retaliatory measure against U.S. tariffs. Analysts, however, predicted this would only have a minor effect since Chinese-made films have long been eclipsing their Hollywood counterparts. Case in point: earlier this year, local hit ‘Ne Zha 2’ outperformed Pixar’s ‘Inside Out 2,’ pulling in nearly $2 billion and becoming the highest-grossing animated feature ever made.

Despite these challenges, Disney took a bold bet that China would embrace ‘Zootopia 2.’ CEO Bob Iger personally flew to Shanghai for the film’s premiere just two weeks ago, emphasizing how seriously the company viewed this market. Disney even teamed up with China Eastern Airlines to launch a custom ‘Zootopia 2’-themed plane, a clear nod to fans’ enthusiasm. And at Shanghai Disneyland, the world’s only ‘Zootopia’-themed land — opened in 2023 — has become a centerpiece attraction, demonstrating the brand’s long-term vision for China.

Industry analyst Paolo Pescatore from PP Foresight explained that Disney’s success depends on blockbuster franchises that expand across merchandise, attractions, and global experiences. “Even amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainty,” he said, “China remains one of Disney’s most crucial, fast-growing markets for entertainment and theme parks alike.”

Yet not everyone views this success as a sign of Hollywood’s revival in Asia. Chris Fenton, author of Feeding the Dragon: Inside the Trillion Dollar Dilemma Facing Hollywood, the NBA, and American Business, warns that this victory could send a misleading signal to U.S. studios. “Beijing isn’t turning back to Hollywood as a stimulus for consumer spending,” he cautioned. “If anything, this only proves that as long as Hollywood sees potential profits in China, it will continue tailoring narratives to fit Beijing’s preferred storylines.”

And this is where things could get controversial — is Disney’s huge success in China proof of smart global adaptation, or a sign that Hollywood is bending too far to political and cultural expectations overseas? Could such compromises eventually dilute the creative freedom that made these films universal to begin with?

What do you think: is ‘Zootopia 2’ a triumph of cross-cultural storytelling — or a warning that Hollywood’s future may depend more on diplomacy than art? Leave a comment and join the debate.
