Travel Advisory Update: UAE, Qatar, and the Middle East Conflict (2026)

The Smartraveller website has toughened its language on travel to Qatar and the UAE, warning Australian travellers of the 'unpredictable security situation' as conflict resumes in the region. This comes as the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) notes that military strikes and reprisal attacks have occurred in the Middle East, including in Qatar and the UAE. The situation is further complicated by the recent Iranian missile and drone attacks on the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and Oman, as well as the US strikes within Iran. The DFAT currently advises Australians to reconsider their need to travel to these countries due to the unpredictable security situation. This advisory was previously 'There remains a risk of military action', but the language has been updated to reflect the current tense situation. A former DFAT official suggests that the Australian government may raise its travel warnings to Level 4 'Do Not Travel' due to the renewed violence. Ian Kemish, who helped establish the Smartraveller country warning system, notes that it's easier for governments to raise travel warnings during a security crisis than to lower them. The DFAT spokesperson emphasizes the unpredictable nature of the situation, stating that conditions could deteriorate rapidly. Smartraveller advises Australians to reconsider their need to travel to Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the UAE, and to transit through these locations as short as possible. The travel industry has been impacted by the uncertainty, with tour operators and insurers affected by the 'do not travel' warning. The Australian Travel Industry Association (AITA) has called for 'urgent travel advice reform' on travel through the Middle East. The situation highlights the challenges of managing travel warnings and the impact on the travel industry, as well as the need for accurate and timely information for travellers.
