Krishi Bank Launches Interest-Free Shariah-Styled FDR Scheme (2026)

Krishi Bank's Revolutionary Interest-Free Deposit Scheme: A Game-Changer for Bangladeshi Savers

Krishi Bank has just unveiled a groundbreaking initiative that's set to revolutionize the way Bangladeshis save their money. The bank has launched a Shariah-compliant, interest-free fixed deposit scheme, catering to those who prefer to avoid earning interest on their savings. This move is a significant step towards providing more inclusive financial services, especially for the country's devout citizens.

A Unique Offering for Devout Savers

In a recent circular, Krishi Bank instructed its branch managers to start offering account opening services for this scheme from February 1st. This scheme is open to all Bangladeshi citizens aged 18 and above, making it accessible to a wide range of individuals. The bank's Deputy Managing Director, Md Khaleduzzaman, highlighted the scheme's approval by the bank's board, which was driven by the demand from religious citizens who prioritize ethical savings.

No Interest, No Charges: A Win-Win Situation

Under this scheme, depositors will not receive any interest, and the bank will cover all government and bank charges, including excise duty, on their behalf. This means account holders can save without worrying about additional costs. Additionally, maintaining a specified balance will grant depositors a debit card, providing them with a convenient and secure way to access their funds.

Catering to a Diverse Customer Base

The circular emphasizes Bangladesh's large religious demographic, many of whom seek secure savings options without accepting bank interest. Krishi Bank believes there's a strong potential to attract these customers with interest-free deposits. The initiative aims to strengthen the bank's deposit base while offering a unique, ethical savings option.

Account Conditions and Benefits

The 'Krishi Bank Interest-Free Fixed Deposit Scheme' comes with specific conditions. A minimum deposit of Tk25,000 is required, with no upper limit. The tenure ranges from one month to three years or longer. Government excise duty is deducted annually in December, but the bank guarantees reimbursement within two days. No tax at source is deducted due to the interest-free nature of the account.

Krishi Bank also waives account maintenance fees, charges for account closure, statements, and SMS services. This scheme is not limited to individuals; mosques, temples, pagodas, churches, graveyards, madrasas, religious institutions, clubs, associations, and similar organizations can also open accounts.

A Unique Selling Point

What sets Krishi Bank's scheme apart is the absence of cheque books. Customers receive a deposit receipt upon account opening, and the account cannot be transferred between branches or used for loans. This approach ensures a secure and transparent savings experience.

Comparing with Other Banks

While interest-free deposit accounts are common in Islamic Shariah-based banks, Krishi Bank's scheme is unique among state-owned banks. Other state-owned banks like Sonali, Janata, Rupali, and Agrani offer savings accounts with written declarations against interest, but they often come with various service charges and maintenance fees. Private banks like City Bank, AB Bank, and Dutch-Bangla Bank provide interest-free services through their Islamic wings, but the options are limited.

A Step Towards Financial Inclusion

Krishi Bank's interest-free fixed deposit scheme is a significant step towards financial inclusion, catering to the needs of religious citizens who prefer ethical savings. This move not only benefits the bank's customers but also contributes to a more diverse and inclusive financial landscape in Bangladesh.
