The ongoing political drama in Kano has reached a boiling point as former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso finds himself facing off against the current Governor Abba Yusuf. This tension has escalated due to Yusuf's impending decision to switch allegiance from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). But here's where it gets controversial: this shift not only reflects personal ambitions but also raises questions about loyalty and the implications of political betrayal.
Kwankwaso has expressed growing concerns over being excluded from significant decisions, feeling overshadowed as his former ally Yusuf seeks to assert his autonomy. Meanwhile, Yusuf appears determined to make the leap, having secured backing from numerous NNPP lawmakers and local government leaders, which amplifies his position.
Yusuf justifies his impending defection as a legitimate exercise of his political rights, claiming it stems from thorough discussions with both the electorate and party stakeholders. To formalize this transition, he has already procured his APC membership card from his local ward, setting the stage for a formal announcement on January 12.
In response, Kwankwaso, who leads the Kwankwasiyya Movement, has issued a stern warning to members contemplating similar defections. He insists that such moves should come with compensatory measures, arguing that those who defect owe a debt to the movement for the support they have received thus far. He articulated this point by stating that political defection often occurs for tangible benefits, remarking, "For someone to abandon his house and go elsewhere, it does not just happen without reason. These people, no doubt, have collected 'goods.'"

This backing was grounded in concerns over unresolved leadership disputes within the party and ongoing legal battles that could threaten the governor's legitimacy and mandate.
House Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini elaborated on the necessity of this defection, warning that remaining tethered to the NNPP poses considerable risks due to internal factional conflicts and the potential for litigation. He drew parallels with Zamfara State, where the Supreme Court ruled that the APC did not have valid candidates, leading to a loss of key political positions.
Hussaini stated, "The NNPP is currently plagued by factional leadership disputes and multiple litigations, creating uncertainty over the validity of its structure and nominations ahead of future elections. There is an existing court judgment that recognizes a particular faction of the NNPP. Therefore, we cannot continue to remain in the party and risk a repeat of the legal disaster that happened in Zamfara State."
