Jett Lawrence's Training Crash: A Setback for the Australian Champ
The racing world is reeling after news broke of Jett Lawrence's unfortunate injury during a training crash at the Dog Pound facility in Florida. The Australian, a reigning AMA Pro Motocross/SuperMotocross champion, suffered a fractured right ankle/foot, requiring surgery to repair a fractured talus and navicular. With a recovery period of at least three months ahead, Lawrence's bid to retake the AMA Supercross title is now in jeopardy.
Lawrence, just 22 years old, has already achieved remarkable success in his career, amassing 10 professional AMA championships. Despite this setback, he remains optimistic, emphasizing his commitment to recovery and the team's resilience. He stated, 'Words can’t describe how I’m feeling right now... I’ll put the same focus into my recovery that I put into being the best athlete I can be each day.'
The injury comes as a double blow, as Lawrence's teammate Jo Shimoda is also recovering from a neck injury sustained last month. For the January 10 AMA Supercross opener in Anaheim, California, Honda HRC Progressive will field Hunter Lawrence and Chance Hymas. Hunter, a consistent contender, and Hymas, fresh from a successful ACL surgery recovery, will represent the team in the upcoming season.
Despite the challenges, the team remains focused on supporting its riders. Brandon Wilson, Manager of Racing and Advertising at American Honda, expressed his sentiments, 'This has been a brutal pre-season for us... We all know Jett would’ve been one of the favorites for the Supercross championship, but as professionals, we also recognize that this is part of racing.'
The racing community is now left to wonder about the impact of these injuries on the upcoming season. Will Lawrence's recovery timeline allow him to defend his crowns? And how will the team's strategy adapt to this unexpected turn of events? The answers to these questions will shape the narrative of the 2026 racing season.
