Michael Dickson, the Australian punter heading to the Super Bowl, has earned a reputation as the finest in the NFL. His remarkable skills are so impressive that his coach, Jay Harbaugh, has chosen to step back and allow Dickson to take the lead during games. "I trust his instincts completely," Harbaugh remarked recently. "It’s not about me advising him on what to do; he’s incredibly experienced and knows exactly how to handle each situation."
Hailing from Sydney, Dickson has the potential to become only the second Australian to celebrate a Super Bowl victory, following offensive tackle Jordan Mailata's success with the Philadelphia Eagles last year. If the Seattle Seahawks manage to triumph over the New England Patriots in the upcoming NFL championship game, Dickson will make history as the first Australian punter ever to win a Super Bowl.
Recognized as the best punter in the league, Dickson has also secured the title of the highest-paid at his position. In June, he signed a lucrative four-year contract extension worth $23.25 million. Since being drafted by the Seahawks in 2018, he has become the longest-tenured player on the team, amassing an extraordinary array of accolades throughout his career. This includes being named an All-Pro twice (in 2018 and the previous year) and earning a spot on the All-Rookie team in 2018. During his college years, he was a two-time All-American (2016, 2017) and received the prestigious Ray Guy Award for the best college punter in 2017. Additionally, he was honored as the College Special Teams Player of the Year twice (2016, 2017) and recognized as one of the top 50 players in Seahawks history.
Nathan Chapman, who founded Prokick Australia in 2007—a training academy that has turned into a powerhouse for developing Australian punters—was never surprised by Dickson's accomplishments. "Not at all," Chapman said. He realized Dickson had exceptional talent the moment he joined Prokick Australia for a try-out in 2015. A year earlier, Dickson had been part of the Sydney Swans' academy but was not selected in the AFL draft. "He had the potential to play in the AFL, but sometimes timing just doesn’t work out," Chapman explained. "His ability to read the game and handle pressure was clear from the start, even if he missed that opportunity."
Opting to take a break from Australian rules football, Dickson moved to Melbourne to pursue his dream at Prokick Australia. It quickly became evident that he possessed not only remarkable physical attributes and kicking skills but also an unparalleled level of professionalism, dedication, and a tireless work ethic. "We knew he could kick a football, but it was his commitment that truly stood out," Chapman noted. "He absorbed everything we taught him and then added his unique flair to his technique. It became apparent early on that he was capable of competing at a high level, which is why we offered him a chance at Texas. You don’t get that opportunity unless you can prove yourself."
Chapman described Dickson's 2016 season as a "whirlwind," after which he continued to excel. The Seahawks selected him with the 149th pick in the NFL Draft following an outstanding 2017 college season. In his debut NFL season, Dickson not only made the Pro Bowl—an annual showcase of the league's elite talent—but also began accumulating numerous accolades. His performance has drawn praise not just for his punting but also for his tactical intelligence on the field. "What stands out about him is his ability to perceive the game and execute various types of kicks under pressure while maintaining a high standard," Chapman emphasized. "He can adapt his kicking style, whether it’s a drop punt, banana kick, or long-distance kick, as if he’s playing a strategic game of chess against the opposing team."
But can this incredible instinct be taught? Chapman believes it's a combination of both innate ability and learned skills. "Confidence plays a significant role in this," he explained. "When coaches trust their players and allow them the freedom to express themselves, it fosters growth. However, not every coach has the experience of kicking a football themselves, which can lead to misunderstandings in the dynamics of the relationship between coach and player. There has to be a solid rapport between them."
Despite the complexities involved in special teams, where coordination among eleven players is crucial, Dickson has continuously proven his worth. "They have relied on him without reservation, and he has consistently delivered impressive results," Chapman said.
Today, Dickson serves as a leading ambassador for Prokick Australia, which boasts six former students currently playing in the NFL and around 80 to 85 more competing at the collegiate level in the United States. Overall, the academy has facilitated U.S. college scholarships for over 400 alumni, exceeding Chapman's initial expectations. "When I wrote the business plan, I envisioned achieving this sooner, but it took years of hard work to reach our current status," he recalled.
As Dickson prepares for the Super Bowl, he joins the ranks of just four Australian punters to ever play in this prestigious game, following Ben Graham (Arizona, 2009), Mitch Wishnowsky (San Francisco, 2020), and Arryn Siposs (Philadelphia, 2023)—all of whom faced defeat. Only Mailata, born in Bankstown, can lay claim to a victory in this ultimate showdown of American sports. Additionally, Jesse Williams remains another notable Australian with a Super Bowl ring, having been part of the Seattle roster in 2014, although he did not play due to injury.
