Imagine a world where managing your contacts becomes easier and more intuitive—this is what Google seems to be pursuing with the potential introduction of a new shortcut for Calling Cards within the Google Contacts app.
In brief, Google is responding to user feedback by planning to implement a shortcut for Calling Cards in the ‘Organize’ section of its Google Contacts application. Meanwhile, updates are also on the way for the Google Phone app, which is undergoing a design refresh known as Material 3 Expressive. This update aims to enhance the appearance and functionality of the Call Screen settings. However, it’s important to note that these features have not yet been made available to the wider public.
The concept of Calling Cards on Android finds its roots in Apple's Contact Posters feature. Google has been actively working to improve this feature by addressing some common criticisms from users. One of the main issues has been the expectation that Calling Cards would be integrated directly into the Google Contacts app; currently, they can only be managed through the Google Phone app. To alleviate this confusion, the company appears to be adding a shortcut to Calling Cards within the Contacts app, facilitating easier access for users. Additionally, Google continues to enhance various aspects of the Phone app with the Material 3 Expressive design.
At present, users can only navigate to the Calling Card management page through the settings menu of the Google Phone app, which is the intended design. However, in the recent version of Google Contacts, we’ve discovered code that indicates a shortcut may soon be available for accessing the Calling Cards screen directly. We took the liberty to activate this shortcut ourselves, giving you an exclusive sneak peek:
As illustrated, tapping on the new option in the Organize tab would lead users directly to the Calling Cards management interface within the Google Phone app.
In addition to the shortcut news, there are exciting developments regarding the overall look of the Google Phone app. While most of the app has already transitioned to the sleek Material 3 Expressive design, some submenus still reflect the older user interface. In the latest version of the Google Phone app, we’ve identified ongoing efforts to extend the Material 3 Expressive style to additional sections, particularly within the Call Screen settings. We’ve activated this updated UI to showcase what’s coming:
Notice that the previous animations have been eliminated, and thanks to the new card-based interface, the Call Screen settings appear tidier and more user-friendly.
