Despite this significant shift within the organization, two key figures from the team's challenging era have successfully secured new roles within Major League Baseball, albeit not in their previous capacities.
Bill Schmidt, who served as the general manager, and Bud Black, the former manager, have both found new opportunities with different teams. Black is returning to the San Diego Padres, where he previously managed for nine seasons from 2007 to 2015, before taking charge of the Rockies in 2017. His new role as a senior advisor of baseball operations marks a notable transition, though he has expressed interest in potentially stepping back into a managerial position in the future. However, following his dismissal after a rough start to the season, where the team recorded a dismal 7-33, he did not find any openings to return to the dugout right away.
On the other hand, Jon Heyman of the New York Post revealed that Schmidt has joined the Oakland Athletics in a scouting capacity. This role takes him back to his roots in baseball, as he began his career in scouting before climbing the ranks over the past twenty-five years within the Rockies organization, eventually taking on the role of general manager in 2021. This promotion initially came when he was appointed on an interim basis after Jeff Bridich stepped down, and it was later confirmed as his official title.
The Rockies concluded their tumultuous season with a staggering record of 43-119, leading to Schmidt's dismissal shortly after. As both men embark on their new journeys with different franchises, it raises questions about their legacies with the Rockies and what the future holds for them in the league.
