In the heart of Brunswick Heads, a coastal gem, lies a captivating architectural tale. Tanev Muir Architects have crafted a masterpiece that seamlessly blends the old with the new, creating a home that is both a respectful nod to the past and a modern marvel.
The Vision
This project is a testament to the power of architectural sensitivity. The architects, themselves owners of the 1960s beach shack, embarked on a journey to update their beloved home while preserving the unique character of Brunswick Heads. The result? An extension that gracefully touches the landscape, unfolding like a work of art.
Unfolding Spaces
At the heart of the design is a fern-filled courtyard, a central void that brings dappled light into every room. The floor plan rotates around this oasis, with the existing cottage transformed into an intimate reading nook and cozy bedrooms. The journey through the house is a delightful dance around the courtyard, reminiscent of the nearby meandering river.
Material Magic
The material palette is a masterpiece in itself. Japanese finger tiles in rich, earthy tones create a sense of organic movement, echoing the flow of water. This theme continues with spotted gum cabinetry in the kitchen, showcasing a unique swirling grain. Even the island bench is a split personality, offering both a stainless steel work zone and a cozy perch for relaxation.
A Place of Porosity
The main bedroom is a sanctuary, tucked away from guest quarters and connected to a spacious rear deck. Here, a large daybed blurs the lines between indoors and out, creating a seamless space for relaxation.
