The BAFTAs went from a celebration of talent to a deeply upsetting incident, leaving many feeling betrayed.
It's been a week since the glamorous BAFTA awards ceremony, an evening meant to shine a spotlight on creativity, diversity, and inclusion. However, for host Alan Cumming, the event unfortunately devolved into what he's described as a "trauma triggering shitshow." This strong statement comes after a deeply regrettable moment during the broadcast.
But here's where it gets controversial...
As actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage presenting an award, a racial slur was audibly shouted. The individual responsible was John Davidson, a campaigner for Tourette's Syndrome, who was present to celebrate a film that chronicles his life. The BBC, responsible for broadcasting the event, made the decision not to edit out this offensive language from its live transmission. For over 12 hours, viewers were exposed to the slur before the program was eventually removed from BBC iPlayer. By then, the incident had already ignited significant global discussion and media attention.
Cumming, known for his roles and for hosting the US version of 'The Traitors,' has now issued a personal statement expressing his profound disappointment and sorrow. He shared, "I'm so sorry for all the pain Black people have felt at hearing that word echoed round the world. I'm so sorry the Tourettes community has been reminded of the lack of understanding and tolerance that abounds regarding their condition." He emphasized that the only potential positive outcome from this unfortunate event is a stark reminder of the power of words, the folly of making hasty judgments without full understanding, and the crucial need to recognize and honor all forms of trauma.
And this is the part most people miss...
While the BBC did opt to censor a second racial slur that occurred during the ceremony, and also edited out other moments like a director's call to "free Palestine," the decision to broadcast the initial slur has drawn considerable criticism. Cumming pointedly remarked, "We were all let down by decisions made to both broadcast slurs and censor free speech." He concluded by offering congratulations to the artists whose achievements were unfortunately overshadowed by the night's events.
Delroy Lindo, one of the actors present during the incident, has also spoken out. While attending the NAACP Image Awards in California, he expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of support, stating, "We appreciate - I appreciate - all of the support and love we have been shown in the aftermath of what happened last weekend, it means a lot to us." He highlighted the NAACP Awards as a space where "being fully seen is not rare, but it is expected," contrasting it with the experience at the BAFTAs.
Both the BBC and BAFTA have issued apologies. The BBC has since labeled the incident a "serious mistake" and initiated a "fast-tracked" investigation. John Davidson, who has Tourette's Syndrome, has expressed being "deeply mortified" by his involuntary outburst. The film celebrating his life, 'I Swear,' which was nominated for several awards, ultimately won two: best casting and best actor for Robert Aramayo, who portrayed Davidson.
