A young girl's determination to help her mother shines through in this heartwarming story. Five-year-old Maddie is about to embark on a 5-kilometer Santa run, motivated by her mother's battle with a severe illness. But this isn't just any ordinary run; it's a mission to raise awareness and funds for a cause close to her heart.
Maddie's mother, Ellis Russell, has been living with ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), since she was just 19 years old. Ellis's journey began with a life-threatening toxic megacolon, giving her only a 20% chance of survival. Against all odds, she pulled through but has continued to face challenges due to colitis.
But here's where Maddie's story takes a turn: Despite her young age, Maddie has shown incredible empathy and a desire to help. She's an avid runner, joining her dad for Parkruns since May. When Ellis was hospitalized again in September, Maddie took action. She asked her dad to reach out to the Exeter City Santa Run organizers, wanting to participate and raise money for Crohn's and Colitis UK.
"We're so proud of Maddie's initiative," Ellis expressed. "She even wanted to donate her own money to help people like me." This level of compassion and understanding from such a young child is remarkable.
Ellis, a primary school teacher, highlights the lack of awareness around IBD. She recalls learning about Crohn's disease in school but not colitis, which made recognizing her own symptoms difficult. Now, she's determined to change that. Ellis is part of a local campaign and supports Exeter City player Jack Fitzwater's initiative, 'Know Your Sh*t', which encourages people to get screened for IBD.
This story raises an important question: How can we improve awareness and education about 'taboo' health topics? Should schools and communities be doing more to educate young people about these issues? Share your thoughts below, and let's continue Maddie's inspiring journey by sparking meaningful conversations.
