2026 Flu Vaccine: Expert Advice for GPs and Patients (2026)

The 2026 flu vaccine is set to be rolled out, and GPs are being provided with essential guidance. The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has released a comprehensive factsheet, offering practical advice for healthcare professionals administering this year's influenza vaccines. According to the ATAGI's statement, healthcare provider recommendation is a powerful motivator for vaccination. The National Immunisation Program (NIP) has also issued separate advice, recommending both the NIP-funded adjuvanted vaccine (Fluad) and the private market high-dose influenza vaccine (Fluzone High-Dose) for adults aged 65 and above. Flucelvax is NIP-funded for individuals aged 5 to 64 with medical conditions that increase their risk of flu complications. The statement clarifies that there's no preference between Flucelvax and standard egg-based vaccines, and that flu vaccines can be administered alongside other vaccines. The updated advice recommends annual influenza vaccination when it becomes available in April 2026. For those who received the 2025 vaccine, it's advised to still get the 2026 version when it's available. The factsheet includes specific guidance for various groups, such as travelers, children, pregnant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, those aged 65 and over, and medically at-risk patients. Australian flu vaccine manufacturer CSL Seqirus has confirmed that private market vaccines are now available for clinics and pharmacies, with the company supporting doctors with vaccine stock. This year also marks the introduction of needle-free flu vaccines for children in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia. The advice comes at a critical time as flu cases surge across Australia, with 2025 recording the highest cases in over 25 years. As of 2026, nearly 19,000 influenza cases have been reported nationwide. Australia's Chief Medical Officer and former RACGP President, Professor Michael Kidd, emphasizes the importance of GP recommendations in driving vaccination acceptance. He encourages healthcare professionals to play a vital role in protecting individuals, families, and communities through annual influenza vaccination, especially during the winter months.
